Ezy Reading:
Kahului, HI
Evan Kanarakis

Overhead the planes, they keep arriving
A fresh brigade
Sporting crisp aloha shirts
And asking directions
To the nearest luau

Little brother scowls
These haoles, these interlopers
To our island home
No respect, he says
No understanding

But with a hush
My puna
My grandmother
Quiets him
“Paradise belongs to no-one”

Again she shares
Of when great chief Maui and his father Ru
Raised the sky
To save all mankind
And save they did

My brother nods- she’s right
Just nags at him sometimes
I feel his frustration
Even as he now departs for lunch
To Denny’s
