Ezy Reading: An Exhausting Start to a Great Year

Evan Kanarakis

What a start to the New Year!
It seems the excesses of the holiday run
Have left me ill

Throbbing head, aching body and a brutal cold are proof enough
I’m worn out
And late nights may have been to blame

Flu medications have left me numb
Bizarre dreams when I’m not tossing and turning
And hot sweats to chills from hour to hour

I can’t deny I overdid it
So much travel back and forth in so little time
And countless toasts for Christmas and New Years all blurred into one

There were beers, tequila and the occasional cigarette
(That’s another damned resolution to remember!)
And even the pleasant burn of a Polish cherry vodka called Wisniowka

They all contributed to hangovers
And fought through the pain I did
To live another night of laughs and distraction from life- for a while

But now it’s all over, and I’m holed up in bed
With the New Year have come new responsibilities
And it’s a full plate ahead

But I’m not feeling sorry for myself
My investment in fun was well worth this pain
In a few days I’ll be just fine

For as odd as it sounds
Though excess exhausted me it has also renewed me
And this year is full of hope and opportunity
