Ezy Reading: A Glance Back To The Rock of Old- The Monthly Seed, No.1, May 1999

Evan Kanarakis

This week, Ezy Reading has turned to the deepest darkest archives of rock to bring all you nostalgia-hunters a peek at the very first ‘Monthly Seed’ from May of 1999, which was the monthly newsletter of Sydney outfit Appleseed.

Personally, as manager of the band during that period, it is quite a trip to look back upon what was an especially fun, exciting time in my life and of the band members, filled with plenty of promise and hope about the band’s future potential.

Well, as they say, life can sometimes get in the way of things, and so it did for Appleseed, but not before they had managed to secure a dedicated fan following, released a number of well-received CD’s, and engaged in all those necessary hard-work road trips, smoke-filled-room pub gigs and endless hours in the recording studio to have at the very least earned their ‘rock and roll stripes’.

Seven years on, some of us are still involved in the music industry, others have moved on to other fields, and others still are –at the behest of that rock and roll lifestyle- happy, proud fathers and well settled into a life of domestic bliss. The years sure can zip by, and I could have sworn it was just yesterday we were jumping up and down and yelling in delight when the band’s debut single, Speedway Boy first received radio play.

Oh, for those salad days of rock and roll!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
"So anyway, I was lying there, almost naked, in a pile of my own filth, high on all sorts of drugs and full of three bottles of bourbon. The fight had left me with a deep gash on my forehead that was bleeding profusely, and I was busy firing my gun into the wall because, semi-conscious on the shag carpet floor of the Los Angeles Hilton, I was hallucinating and thought that our first drummer had come back to life and was approaching me in a threatening manner with a rusty spoon. Room service didn't want to know me, but who wouldn't trash and set fire to their room if a BLT was served too cold, right? Then, just as the police and newspaper photographers burst into the room, tear gas smoking and cameras flashing, I had a moment of absolute clarity. And, in that brief moment I had to smile. It was all so clear. A warm wave of realisation washed across me. Hey...
Fuck, man... this was rock and roll..."
Tim Elder, Appleseed, May 1999
