Poetry From The Cud:
The Egg
Oliver Duchesne

The Egg

A shiny egg, snug in a nest built of twigs
The shell, delicate and speckled, begins to crack
Any moment now, a little birdie will spring forth
The egg's mother, sensing this, is on her way back

New life emerges in the milky mist
A baby beak steals its first breath of air
Until a hungry hawk swoops in with its talons raised
And takes its breakfast out of there
