My grandfather
Sure had a way with words
Which is to say
(and I share this with love)
He was a regurgitator of idioms

See, he was a busy man
And a busy man
Ain’t got no time for fussin’
With your lousy problems
There was fishing to be had!

It’s funny
When near every human interaction
Is reduced to an idiom
You never really get to know somebody
But it’s not like he was a stranger, either

Perhaps it was more than fishing
He wanted to keep folks at a distance
Who knows why?
Regardless it added to his charm
And I remember all his favorites

Grin and bear it
Harden up
Take it on the chin
Keep on trucking
Get over it

What you gonna’ do?
It is what it is
Tell someone who cares
It ain’t my problem
I don’t give a rat’s ass

Tomorrow is another day
Go back to the drawing board
Live and learn
Mañana!
Slow and steady wins the race

You can do it
Hang in there
I believe in you
Make hay while the sun shines
Leave no stone unturned

I sometimes wonder
How the hell did he charm Grandma?
In the absence of words
Was it just his 'chiseled good looks'
Or the simple assurance that ‘It takes two to tango’?

To this day, his prepared answers for any and all situations
Bring a smile to my face
If one thing is certain (as he himself would say)
He was, most certainly
One in a million
